How We Got Started

Initial efforts to form an association from the entire northwest area of Des Moines resulted in the city officials approving boundries for three separate neighborhoods: Meredith, Lower Beaver and Merle Hay Neighborhood Associations.

After reviewing the history of the boundries, the group learned the Meredith family who farmed the area for many years had later donated land on which the Hoover and Meredith schools were built. The original 370-acre Meredith property was both a dairy and beef cattle farm. With this background the group voted on its name and adopted by-laws and procedural rules.

The MNA has become one of the most active neighborhood associations in Des Moines. The association celebrates its 10-year anniversary in 2010.
