What The MNA Has Accomplished
'No Parking' Signs on 49th St. and Place were installed in 2001 after residents worked with the MNA to initiate a petition for city approval due to resident concerns about the safety of their children.
Palm and Bel-Aire Street Island off the Beaver Avenue were adopted by the membership in 2001 as an on-going volunteer beautification effort with a City program called Partners In Parks and are planted each May and cleaned up each October. The islands provide a beautiful visual entry from the east boundary of the neighborhood and add to property values.
Beaver & Douglas intersection was widened in 2002 with the addition of a left-hand turn lane to greatly improve flow and safety in the community.
Traffic Safety 2004 issues resulted in the installation of a 4-way stop sign at 50th St and Aurora, reduction of the speed limit, and the summer installation of a mid block traffic signal in front of Hoover High School and the restriping of Aurora to 3 lanes.
Westchester Park master redevelopment plan Phase I was completed by the City Parks Department in the summer of 2003 with the addition of the new 2-5 year old playground equipment. Phase II plans added 5-12 year old playground equipment in the summer of 2004. Phase III plans in 2006 added a 36 foot diameter lighted shelter with grill pits and picnic tables and a rope climber. Phase IV is on hold in 2009 awaiting city budget decisions to overlay the asphalt parking lot, additional landscaping, and a 8 foot-wide walking perameter around the park and soccer field.
Member Appreciation Night at local businesses promotes value-added benefits to members with great dinner discounts at Carlos O'Kelly's and Famous Dave's BBQ Restaurants.
Annual Garage Sale is held the third weekend in May on Friday and Saturday in a portion of the neighborhood with 40+ participating homeowners drawing great traffic sales. The MNA partnered for two years with "A Fresh Start" clothing ministry which provided free clothing to those in need in the community.
Free Flowers donated by the Parks & Recreation Dept are planted and maintained by volunteers in May for a neighborhood public show of color.
Garden Tour 2003 of annual and perennial local gardens drews more then 300 visitors in June and features free admittance, printed map, master gardening tips, a plant sale and refreshments.
Fourth of July Kid's Parade and family social starts at 46th Street and Bel-Aire for families in the neighborhood with refreshments, fun games and prizes for the kids at the Westchester Park shelter.
Jazz In July co-sponsored with Merle Hay Neighborhood Association at Hoover Stadium with the Metro Arts Alliance made for a fun relaxing evening listening to Free concert music.
SCRUB Day each July is successfully co-sponsored with the Merle Hay Neighborhood to clean up the neighborhoods and is one of the top ranking events in the city in tonnage.
Golf Tournament in May is sponsored with the Hoover Husky Alliance and draws over 80 golfers and raises student project funds of over $2,000.
National Night Out Family Picnic in August heightens awarness of crime and drug prevention, and provides fun entertainment for families. General Casualty Grant of $1,000 is awarded to help cover the National Night Out expenses and we partner with Target the exclusive National Night Out sponsor across the country.
Holiday Lights Contest in December brightens the spirit of the neighborhood and promotes community involvement. 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winners are awarded a framed plaque, cash prize, yard sign, spotlight, and photos and articles are featured in the newsletter. |
